Dredger fishing along the Scottish coast – image collection
A dredger drags heavy steel rakes and chain bags across the seabed within metres of shore to catch scallops on the West Coast of Scotland. Scotland’s coastal seas were once protected by a three-mile bottom trawling limit, but it was removed in 1984. Today bottom trawling and dredging is permitted 95% of Scotland’s coastal seas. The Our Seas group is campaigning for the Scottish government to reinstate the limit to protect coastal ecosystems and restore low-impact fisheries.
