The Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG) is an association of fishers and fishworkers who have organised to participate effectively in fisheries management and governance. It represents over 4000 members from 133 fishing communities across Ghana’s four coastal regions.
The association promotes sustainable fishing practices and protects Ghana’s marine environment to secure small-scale fishers’ and fishworkers’ welfare, with a particular focus on women and youth.
With support from the TBT Coalition’s Grants Programme, CaFGOAG is launching the Fishers’ Rights Project to secure small-scale fishers’ rights through equitable fisheries co-management.
Starting in four coastal communities in each coastal region, the project will strengthen the call to tackle bottom trawling in Ghana, which decimates fish populations, undermines small-scale fisheries and jeopardises coastal communities’ welfare.
Through the project, CaFGOAG will
- Expose the human rights implications of declining artisanal fisheries catch;
- Strengthen legal and regulatory frameworks to protect the rights of small-scale fishers; and
- Strengthen Co-management Committees to improve fishers’ participation in decision-making.
