Small-scale fishers and large trawlers compete in the same waters
Vezo traditional fishermen in southwest Madagascar sail past a deep water shrimp trawler. While traditional fishermen have fished these waters for centuries, they have no formal claim to them. About 150 foreign industrial fishing vessels are licensed to fish within Madagascan waters.
